Genuine Wool, Genuine Origin.
Gathered in Friendship, Spun with Experience.
A Fibre like a Home in the Wind.
The Pace of Wild Wool.
Faroese Yarn begins on eighteen volcanic rock islands in the middle of the North Atlantic, on the meadows and cliffs of the Faroe Islands.
A place where sheep live half-wild, free, and almost unchanged for centuries. They move through a landscape that feels as old as the sagas - rugged, clear, vast. This land shapes the wool: strong, distinctive, with a structure you recognise the moment you touch it.
Hand shears.
During the brief summer, the sheep are shorn. We are there in the pen. It is not an industrial operation with electric clippers, but a shared moment. Many hands, a steady rhythm, and a respect for the animal that needs no explanation. Shearing is still done with hand shears - a slow, focused process that preserves old routines. The animals know the pattern; they are part of this rhythm. The wool we gather is not anonymous raw material. It comes from animals we know, from people we have been connected to for years.
Sorting and Washing.
On the islands, the wool is collected, sorted by hand again, and - as it once was everywhere - stored in large sacks.
After sorting, we send it to England - to one of the very few remaining wool-washing mills in Europe, a place that understands this wild fibre and works in an environmentally responsible and fair manner. There the wool is washed gently, without losing its natural integrity. Faroese wool needs care. Not industrial thinking.
The fabulous Sheep.
Yes, we do talk to our sheep. They are small, clever, understanding and our partners in wool. Some of them climb on roofs, others like to be cuddled. When winter storms rage and the sheep wander through the village, they seek shelter at night behind stone walls, where they are sheltered from the wind. Or we greet them in the morning when they stand in our doorway. They can be trusting.
But they always remain wild and free.
In the Spinning Mill.
The spinning takes place in a traditional German spinning mill - one of the few that can handle such a robust, independent fibre. Faroese Yarn demands experience. Each batch is spun in small quantities, with a steady hand and close attention.
Our wool is robust, long-fibred, natural and headstrong. The fibre is longer, full of lanolin, and more resilient than classic merino or modern blended yarns.
A yarn with Attitude.
Not a material for fast fashion, but for people who value honesty and longevity. For knitters and weavers who seek a yarn that carries stories: of wind, cliffs, northern light, of a landscape that respects its animals and gives them space. You feel it the moment you work with it. It is warm and idiosyncratic, without being difficult.
And it carries its origin within it - the steep hillsides from which we drive the animals down into the valleys for hours; the hands shearing them in the pen, after bread, pancakes, and coffee have been shared at the gate; the washing mill that cleans the fibre with care; and the spinning mill that loves and masters the craft of slow spinning.
Faroese Yarn is rare. Its way of being made requires time, knowledge, and a network of people who take their work seriously. Anyone who knits or weaves with this yarn will feel that care.
Natural colours, and dyed.
Nature has been kind to our sheep’s appearance. The natural colours of Faroese sheep’s wool are simply beautiful. Various shades of brown, gradations of grey, and cream. We appreciate this, and leave the colours as they are – undyed.
Sometimes in life, though, you need a bit more colour. Because you have a project in mind that you want to bring to life. That’s why we’ve decided to offer four additional colours of wool, dyed: yellow, red, petrol blue and moss green. Colours that go perfectly with our natural tones.
The Faroese have always been knitting. And they still do. In cafés, at home, whilst waiting at the chemist’s. Yes, there are chemists on the archipelago. Even if there are only a few. Our wool embodies the wind, the sea, the islands and a certain attitude to life. And the community from which it originates.
Hey there,
this is us
We are Anja and Francesco. Two people who never planned to work with wool, yet somehow do. Because the wool came to us; because it found us. More than twelve years ago, we travelled to the Faroes for the first time - a holiday that quietly turned into something larger.
Into another life.
We were curious city dwellers, knowing little, eager for everything. And so we stood there: hand shears in our hands, shoulder to shoulder with people we barely knew, greeted with friendly quietness. One shearing became many. Acquaintances became friendships. And friendship became a work that shapes our lives today.
We believe in things that are allowed to endure, in work you can feel, and in connections stronger than any fashion. Perhaps that is what drives us: the simple joy of creating something - of doing something that has meaning.
